Our KuCoin review

Overview

KuCoin started in 2017 and became known as the "people's exchange" because it listed small-cap tokens early. It now offers more than 1,000 digital assets and over 1,300 trading pairs, and says it serves upwards of 40 million users in more than 200 countries. The global platform is run by Peken Global Limited, a Seychelles company. A separate Vienna-based subsidiary, KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH, was set up for the European market.

KuCoin's recent history affects how much you can trust it, as well as what it costs and offers. It combines a very wide token selection and strong tools with a record that includes a large hack and a US criminal guilty plea.

Regulation & safety

On 27 November 2025, Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) authorised KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA. In principle, that allows passporting to 29 EEA markets (Malta excluded). Things then went wrong quickly. On 18 February 2026 the FMA ruled that KuCoin EU could not yet start business operations. On 19 February it banned new business after the firm's AML officer, sanctions compliance officer and their deputies had all left. The FMA lifted the new-business ban on 18 May 2026 once those roles were filled again. However, its official notice said that starting business operations remained prohibited until governance and senior-management requirements are met. The FMA's statement is the primary source for this. KuCoin has also registered with AUSTRAC in Australia.

In the United States, Peken Global pleaded guilty in January 2025 to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. It agreed to penalties of more than $297 million, made up of a $184.5 million forfeiture and a fine of about $112.9 million, and to stay out of the US market for at least two years. Founders Chun Gan and Ke Tang each agreed to forfeit about $2.7 million and to have no further role in management.

On security, KuCoin lost about $280 million in hot-wallet assets in a September 2020 hack. Its co-founder later said around 84% of the stolen funds had been recovered through freezes and on-chain action. Today the exchange publishes Merkle-tree proof of reserves and says its BTC and ETH reserve ratios have stayed above 104%. It also cites SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certifications.

Fees & costs

KuCoin's base costs match the big offshore venues. Level 0 spot fees are 0.10% for both makers and takers. Paying with the KCS token saves 20%, and higher VIP levels go as low as a maker rebate of -0.003% with a 0.03% taker fee at the top tier. Futures start at 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker.

Item Base rate
Spot maker / taker (Level 0) 0.10% / 0.10%
KCS fee discount 20%
Futures maker / taker 0.02% / 0.06%
Max futures / margin leverage 125x / 10x
Assets / pairs 1,000+ / 1,300+

Products

KuCoin's main draw is its catalogue. Beyond spot, it offers:

  • Futures with up to 125x leverage, and margin trading up to 10x.
  • Trading bots, including grid and DCA strategies, built into the platform at no extra subscription cost.
  • Earn products for passive yield on deposited assets.
  • Leveraged tokens, Convert, P2P and an OTC desk.
  • GemSPACE for early-stage listings, plus the KuCard and KuCoin Pay payment products.

Early-stage tokens attract traders looking for new projects, but they also carry high volatility and liquidity risk.

Platforms & tools

KuCoin runs on the web, mobile apps and a full REST/WebSocket API. Its built-in bots are among the more mature on any centralised exchange and suit users who want automated grid trading without third-party software. The interface offers a lite mode for simple purchases and a pro view with full charting and order types. Bot users should know that automation does not remove market risk. Grid strategies in particular can build up losing positions when a token trends sharply in one direction, so start with small allocations and check bot settings regularly.

Deposits, withdrawals & KYC

KYC is now required for every user. Unverified accounts can only close positions or withdraw existing assets, and cannot deposit or trade. Verification needs a government ID and a live selfie. KuCoin says it supports more than 60 fiat currencies through bank transfers (SEPA, PayID, Faster Payments), debit and credit cards, Apple Pay and third-party providers such as Bancontact and SOFORT, plus a P2P market. Crypto deposits are free. Withdrawal fees depend on the asset and network.

Availability

KuCoin is closed to US residents under the 2025 plea agreement. For Europeans, the situation is complicated. KuCoin EU holds a MiCA licence, but the FMA had not allowed full operations as of mid-2026. EEA residents can no longer sign up to the global platform, so new European customers are effectively locked out until the Austrian issues are resolved. Existing EU users have been able to keep trading and withdrawing. Check the official KuCoin site for the rules that apply in your country.

Who it suits

KuCoin fits experienced traders outside the US and EEA who want access to many small-cap tokens, built-in bots and low base fees. It suits less well users who rate regulatory record highly. The DOJ plea and the FMA supervisory actions are serious concerns, not minor compliance issues.

Verdict

KuCoin's token range, futures and automation tools rank among the most complete available, and its fees are competitive. However, it has a 2020 hack behind it, a 2025 US criminal plea and an unsettled European licence. Proof of reserves and recovered hack funds help, but caution is warranted, especially with large balances.
