Our Binance review
Overview
Binance launched in July 2017 and grew within a few years into the busiest centralized crypto venue on the planet. CoinGecko currently tracks more than 500 coins and roughly 1,370 spot pairs on the platform and gives it its maximum trust score. The company describes itself as remote-first with no official headquarters, although its global operations have been placed under the supervision of Abu Dhabi's financial regulator. The breadth of its markets is the main draw; the main reservations are its legal history and patchy access in Western markets.
Regulation and safety
Binance's regulatory map changed substantially over the past three years. In November 2023 the company pleaded guilty in the United States to anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations and agreed to pay about $4.3 billion, while founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down as CEO and later served a prison sentence. He received a presidential pardon in October 2025, but the corporate settlement stands as part of the exchange's record.
Since then the firm has pursued licences. In December 2025 the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Abu Dhabi Global Market granted three licences to Binance-linked entities covering exchange, clearing and custody, and broker-dealer activity, with regulated operations planned from January 2026. Binance also holds a VASP licence from Dubai's VARA (2024), an authorisation in Bahrain, and registrations in France, Italy, Spain, Poland and other countries.
Europe is the weak spot. Binance applied for a MiCA licence in Greece in January 2026 but withdrew the application on 24 June 2026, shortly before the transitional period ended. From 1 July 2026 it stopped onboarding new EEA users and limited many existing accounts to withdrawals and position management, with details depending on the country and servicing entity. In the UK, new registrations have been closed since 2023. Binance says it intends to seek authorisation in another member state.
The Greek episode drew wide attention. Binance had set up a local holding company, Binary Greece, and the Hellenic Capital Market Commission hired several large advisory firms to help with a fast-track review. In September 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported that the president of the European Central Bank had urged Greece not to approve the bid; the Greek regulator publicly rejected that account. Whatever the reason, the practical outcome for EU residents is the same: as of early November 2026 Binance did not appear on ESMA's register of authorised crypto-asset service providers.
October 2026 security incident
On 29 October 2026 Binance hot wallets on several blockchains were drained in what is reported as the largest crypto theft on record, at roughly $6.3 billion according to Binance (blockchain analytics firm Elliptic puts it at about $6.4 billion). The FBI attributed the attack to the North Korea-linked group TraderTraitor. According to reports summarising Binance's updates, the company paused withdrawals on 30 October, said customers would not pay for the loss, and began covering it from its SAFU fund, futures insurance fund and treasury; withdrawals reopened in stages from 1 November. Roughly $3 billion in stablecoins was reported frozen by issuers. A full technical post-mortem had not been published when we checked, so treat these figures as provisional.
On the custody side, Binance publishes monthly Merkle-tree proof-of-reserves reports; the end-2025 snapshot covered around $162.8 billion of customer assets across 45 tokens. It also keeps the SAFU emergency fund, which covered the roughly 7,000 BTC lost in a 2019 API-key and phishing attack.
Fees and costs
Pricing is among the lowest of the large exchanges. Regular users pay 0.10% on both sides of a spot trade, and paying fees in BNB lowers that to 0.075%. USDⓈ-M futures start at 0.02% for makers and 0.05% for takers, with VIP tiers reducing costs further for high-volume accounts.
| Item | Binance (regular user) |
|---|---|
| Spot maker / taker | 0.10% / 0.10% |
| Spot with BNB discount | 0.075% / 0.075% |
| USDⓈ-M futures maker / taker | 0.02% / 0.05% |
| Maximum futures leverage | Up to 125x (most liquid pairs) |
| Coins listed (CoinGecko) | 500+ |
Card purchases and some fiat routes carry extra charges, so the headline trading fee is not the full cost for users buying with cards.
Products and markets
Few venues match the menu. Alongside spot and margin (capped at 5x), Binance runs USDⓈ-margined and coin-margined futures with leverage up to 125x on the most liquid contracts, plus options. Passive products include flexible and locked Earn, staking and Launchpool, while HODLer Airdrops, Megadrop and Binance Alpha give exposure to new tokens. Copy trading, grid and other bots, a P2P marketplace, Binance Pay and a self-custody Web3 wallet round out the ecosystem. Eligible customers outside the United States can also access US stock exposure and prediction markets. Availability of each product varies sharply by country.
That breadth comes with risk. Futures at triple-digit leverage can be liquidated by a move of well under one percent, and newly launched tokens are often highly volatile. Binance's own product pages carry risk warnings, and users should read the terms of locked Earn products, which may restrict early redemption.
Platforms and tools
Binance offers a web terminal, desktop and mobile apps with a simplified "Lite" mode and a full "Pro" mode, a demo environment for futures, and extensive REST and WebSocket APIs used by many algorithmic traders. Its BTCUSDT market is one of the reference spot feeds on TradingView under the BINANCE prefix.
Deposits and withdrawals
Identity verification is mandatory for every account. Fiat can be added via bank transfer or card in more than 40 currencies, including USD, GBP, AUD, BRL, TRY and JPY, and the P2P desk lets users trade directly with each other using local payment methods. Crypto deposits are free apart from network costs, and withdrawals carry network-based fees. Supported fiat rails differ by country, so users should check what their local entity offers before funding an account. EEA users affected by the July 2026 restrictions can still withdraw their assets, but fresh deposits and new spot orders are switched off for them. Verified accounts receive higher withdrawal limits than accounts at lower verification levels.
Who it suits
Binance fits active traders outside the EU, UK and US who want the widest selection of tokens, tight spreads and low trading fees, and who are comfortable with a complex interface. Beginners in restricted regions, or anyone who prioritises a long, clean regulatory record, may prefer a smaller but more conservative venue. Residents of the United States, Canada and the Netherlands cannot open an account on Binance.com.
Verdict
On liquidity, fees and breadth of products, Binance remains the benchmark. Monthly reserve reports and the new ADGM licences have improved transparency, but the 2023 US settlement and the loss of EU access in 2026 hold its score back. The October 2026 hot-wallet hack is a serious mark against its security record, even though Binance says users will not bear the loss; check Binance's official announcements for the latest withdrawal and reimbursement status. Current fees and terms are published on Binance's official website.
