Our OANDA review

Overview

OANDA is one of the longest-running names in online currency trading. It was set up in 1996 by Dr Michael Stumm, a computer engineering professor at the University of Toronto, and econometrician Dr Richard Olsen. The company first became known for publishing free exchange-rate data online in 1998, launched its fxTrade platform in 2001 and was the first broker to quote fractional pips in 2004. OANDA Corporation lists its office in New York, and the group now runs regulated subsidiaries in eight financial centres. Private equity firm CVC owned OANDA from 2018 until prop-trading company FTMO completed its purchase of the group on 1 December 2025. The firm marks its 30th anniversary in 2026.

Unlike most CFD brokers, OANDA accepts US residents through a CFTC-registered entity, which makes it one of a small number of retail forex dealers available in the United States. Visit the official OANDA website to check which entity serves your country.

Regulation and safety

Regulation is OANDA's strongest point. The group footer lists the following licensed subsidiaries:

  • OANDA Corporation (US) – Futures Commission Merchant and Retail Foreign Exchange Dealer registered with the CFTC, NFA member ID 0325821.
  • OANDA Europe Limited (UK) – authorised by the FCA, firm reference 542574.
  • OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC – regulated by CIRO.
  • OANDA Australia Pty Ltd – ASIC, AFSL 412981.
  • OANDA Asia Pacific Pte Ltd – Capital Markets Services licence from the MAS in Singapore.
  • OANDA Japan – Type I Financial Instruments Business registration.
  • OANDA TMS Brokers S.A. – supervised by the Polish KNF.
  • OANDA Global Markets Ltd – BVI Financial Services Commission, licence SIBA/L/20/1130, for clients outside the main regulated regions.

The record is not spotless. In August 2020 the CFTC ordered OANDA Corporation to pay a $500,000 penalty for falling below minimum net capital in 2019, paying dividends in breach of equity withdrawal rules and related reporting and supervision failures; the regulator noted no evidence of customer losses. In May 2025 the NFA fined the same entity $600,000 over net capital, customer security deposit and supervision issues, and ordered restitution to affected clients. OANDA settled without admitting or denying the charges. Both cases relate to the US unit, and neither involved a loss of client money, but they are worth knowing about.

Fees and costs

OANDA offers two pricing models. The default is spread-only pricing with no commission. ForexBrokers.com measured an average EUR/USD spread of roughly 1.68 pips on this model in August 2025, which is wider than the cheapest brokers. Active traders can choose core pricing, which pairs tighter raw spreads with a commission. For BVI clients the help centre lists a commission of $40 per $1 million notional per side (about $4 per standard lot each way); US reviewers quote $5 per $100,000 per side. Premium and Elite tiers add spread reductions or volume rebates for larger accounts.

Products and accounts

The product line-up depends heavily on where you live. Outside the US, clients trade CFDs on about 68 currency pairs, indices, commodities, metals, bonds and shares, with crypto CFDs in selected regions (not for UK retail clients). US clients trade spot forex rather than CFDs and can buy actual cryptocurrencies through a partnership with Paxos. Position sizes can be as small as one unit of currency, which is useful for testing strategies with very small amounts. Leverage follows local rules: 50:1 on major pairs in the US, 30:1 for UK and EU retail clients, and up to 888:1 at OANDA Global Markets in the BVI, with margin rising on larger positions.

Account options include the standard account, core pricing, and Premium or Elite tiers for high-balance or high-volume traders. Third-party reviews also report swap-free accounts in some regions, though availability should be confirmed with the relevant entity.

Platforms and tools

OANDA's own platform, OANDA Trade, runs on web, desktop and mobile and uses TradingView-powered charts. MetaTrader 4 is widely available, MetaTrader 5 is offered through selected entities (not to US clients), and direct TradingView account integration is available for residents of the US, UK and Canada. Developers can use the long-standing REST API, and the group also supports NinjaTrader, MultiCharts and MotiveWave connections plus VPS hosting. OANDA's EUR/USD price feed is published on TradingView under the OANDA:EURUSD symbol, one of the most widely used FX charts on that platform. Copy trading is available in some regions.

Deposits and withdrawals

There is no minimum deposit on the standard account, which keeps entry costs low. Available methods vary by entity; the BVI site shows bank transfer, Wise, Visa, Mastercard, Neteller and Skrill. US clients mostly fund by bank wire or bank transfer. Core pricing in some regions requires a larger balance, so check the account page before choosing a model.

Who OANDA suits

  • US residents looking for a long-established, CFTC-registered forex dealer.
  • Traders who value strong multi-jurisdiction regulation over the lowest possible spreads.
  • Beginners who want to start with a tiny balance and micro position sizes.
  • Algorithmic traders who need a mature API.

Cost-sensitive scalpers on the spread-only account may find cheaper pricing elsewhere, and those wanting very high leverage will only find it at the offshore BVI entity.

Verdict

OANDA combines three decades of history, licences in eight major markets and an unusual ability to serve US clients. Its spread-only pricing is not the cheapest, and the 2020 CFTC and 2025 NFA penalties show that compliance lapses have occurred at the US unit. For traders who prioritise regulatory coverage, low entry requirements and solid charting, it remains a credible choice. CFDs and leveraged forex are high-risk products, and most retail accounts lose money; confirm terms for your own country before opening an account.
